UK casino guides

Our UK casino guides explain how online gambling works in Great Britain, in plain English and with sources: the law, licences, tax, the bonus rules and the tools that help you stay in control. Each guide answers one question in full. This page gives you the short version of each, so you know where to start.

Quick answer

What do UK casino players need to know?

Our UK casino guides come down to a few rules. Online gambling is legal in Great Britain for adults at sites licensed by the UK Gambling Commission, and you can check any licence on the public register in two minutes. Winnings are tax-free for players. Since 19 January 2026, bonus wagering is capped at 10x, and online slots have a £5 stake limit, or £2 for ages 18 to 24. GamStop blocks every licensed site at once, and no licensed UK casino accepts crypto.

Why we write UK casino guides

We write UK casino guides because most questions players ask are not about a single casino. They are about the rules that every casino has to follow: whether a site is legal, whether you pay tax on a win, why a bonus has the terms it has, or why a slot looks different here than on a stream. The rules changed a lot between 2020 and 2026, and many pages online still describe the old ones. Our guides set out the rules as they stand in 2026, explain why they exist, and show what they mean for you in pounds and minutes.

Every guide is checked against the Gambling Commission, government publications and other primary sources. Where sources disagree, or a rule is still being consulted on, we say so.

Gambling law: is it legal to play?

Yes, if you are 18 or over and the site holds a Gambling Commission licence. The Gambling Act 2005 is the main law, and since 2014 any operator serving people in Great Britain needs a UK licence, wherever it is based. Northern Ireland has its own older law and no online licensing system. Playing at an unlicensed site is not an offence for the player, but it removes every UK protection. UKGC licence: how to check a casino

A licence is the first thing to check. Find the account number in the casino's footer, search for it on the Gambling Commission public register, and confirm three things: the licence is active, it covers remote casino, and the exact domain you are on is listed. Our A to Z lists all 660 licensed casino brands from 96 operators. Step by step: Gambling Commission licence check

GamStop and safer gambling tools

Every licensed casino must offer deposit limits, reality checks, time-outs and self-exclusion. GamStop goes further: one free registration blocks every licensed gambling site for 6 months, 1 year or 5 years, and it cannot be cancelled early. Bank gambling blocks and blocking software add more layers. How it all works: GamStop self exclusion, and our responsible gambling page for the casino tools and where to get help.

Gambling tax: do you pay on winnings?

No. UK players do not pay tax on gambling winnings and do not report them to HMRC. Operators pay duty on their profits instead, and Remote Gaming Duty on online casino games rose from 21% to 40% on 1 April 2026. Duty on most remote sports bets goes from 15% to 25% in April 2027. Money your winnings earn later, such as interest, is taxed in the usual way. The detail: tax on gambling winnings in the UK

The 10x wagering cap and bonus rules

Since 19 January 2026, no UK casino bonus can require more than 10 times the bonus amount in wagering, and offers that mix casino and betting are banned. A £50 bonus that once needed £1,750 of bets at 35x now needs at most £500. With wagering capped, the terms that decide value are win caps, game weighting, time limits and spin value. Slot stake limits

Online slots in Great Britain have a maximum stake per spin: £5 for players aged 25 and over since 9 April 2025, and £2 for players aged 18 to 24 since 21 May 2025. The limits cover online slots only, not table games, live casino, bingo or betting. A bonus can still set a lower maximum bet while you wager it. Full rules: slot stake limits

Bonus buy, autoplay and turbo spins

UK versions of slots have no bonus buy, because the Gambling Commission told operators in 2020 that paid feature buy-ins break its technical standards. Since 31 October 2021, slots must also have no autoplay, no turbo or slam stop, and at least 2.5 seconds per spin, with your session time and net position on screen. Why each rule exists: why UK slots have no bonus buy

Crypto casinos

No casino licensed by the Gambling Commission accepts Bitcoin or other cryptocurrencies. Every crypto casino offered to UK players is unlicensed in Great Britain, outside GamStop and outside UK dispute rules. The Commission has begun to explore whether a controlled route could exist, with no timetable. Our guide explains the position, the risks and the fast legal payment options instead: crypto casino UK

How we research and update the guides

Each guide starts from the primary source: the Gambling Commission's rules, licence conditions and public statements, government announcements, and HMRC guidance for tax. Law firm briefings and industry news help us read those sources, but a rule only goes into a guide once we can trace it back to the regulator or the government. Dates matter in gambling law, so we give the date a rule came into force rather than "recently" or "new".

The rules keep moving. The government's 2023 white paper led to the stake limits in 2025 and the bonus rules in 2026, and the tax changes from the 2025 Budget run into 2027. When a consultation closes or a rule takes effect, we update the guide that covers it, and the bonus, slot and casino pages that depend on it.

What our guides do not cover

We do not write strategy guides that promise to beat the house edge, because no strategy changes the maths of a casino game. We do not explain how to get around GamStop, play at sites that are not licensed in Great Britain or use crypto at offshore casinos. And we do not give legal or financial advice for your own situation. If you need that, a solicitor, a tax adviser or Citizens Advice can help.

Where to go next

Once you know the rules, the rest of the site shows how each casino measures up against them. Our UK casino sites list ranks every licensed casino we review by score, and our scoring page shows exactly how that score is built. The casino bonuses pages compare current offers by wagering, spins and time limit, and the payment guides explain deposit and withdrawal times for each method.

If a rule changes, we update the guide that covers it and the pages that depend on it. If you spot something that looks out of date, tell us.
